Best Electric Snow Blower: 5 Battery and Corded Picks Compared

The EGO Power+ SNT2134 is the best electric snow blower here: it has the longest listed throw, up to 45 ft, a 21 in by 13 in clearing path, two 6.0 Ah batteries in the kit and a 5-year tool warranty (3 years on the batteries). Three of the five picks run on batteries and two are corded.

The EGO Power+ SNT2134 is my top pick if throw distance matters most to you: it throws farther than anything else here, up to 45 ft, against 0 to 30 ft on the PowerSmart DB7521 and up to 25 ft on both Snow Joes.

This single-stage machine comes as a kit with two 6.0 Ah batteries and a dual-port charger, and Peak Power combines two recommended EGO 56 V batteries. You also get heated handle grips, a steel auger, a brushless motor and handle-mounted levers for chute pitch and direction. An SNT2130 configuration is sold as the snow blower only, with no battery and no charger.

EGO rates it for up to a 14-car driveway with 8 in of snow on a single charge with two 6.0 Ah batteries. Here's the catch: no weight, run time in minutes or charge time is listed.

Buy it if you want the farthest throw here and two batteries in the box.

Skip it if you need a listed weight or run time before you buy.

The Greenworks 60V 20-Inch Single-Stage is the pick if you want the lightest listed battery machine: 38.68 lb with the battery, against 45.2 lb with batteries for the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB22. It's also the only battery pick with a run time in minutes. Greenworks puts it at up to 30 minutes on a single charge.

The trade-off is path and throw. Its 20 in path is the narrowest here, and its throw is the shortest, at 20 ft in one spec list and 22 ft in another. The kit holds one 5.0 Ah battery and a charger, where the EGO and the Snow Joe 24V kits include two batteries.

It's single-stage and not self-propelled, with a brushless motor, a poly (plastic) impeller, LED headlights and push-button start. The battery also powers over 75 Greenworks 60-volt tools, but the blower isn't compatible with the 60V 8.0 Ah battery.

Buy it if you want the lightest listed battery machine and a run time figure up front.

Skip it if you want a path wider than 20 in.

The Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB22 cuts the widest path of the battery picks: 22 in wide by 13 in deep, against 21 in on the EGO and 20 in on the Greenworks. Its kit includes two 24 V 8.0 Ah batteries and a high-speed dual-port charger, and the two batteries make up its 48 V power source.

It's heavier than the Greenworks, though, at 45.2 lb with batteries against 38.68 lb. The single-stage design pairs a 1600 W brushless motor with a 4-blade rubber-tipped steel auger, and the motor moves up to 840 lb of snow per minute, the same figure as the corded SJ627E's maximum. It works with the IONMAX 24-Volt battery system.

Snow Joe says the high-speed dual-port charger can recharge in as fast as 2 hours. No run time per charge is listed, though.

Buy it if you want the widest battery path and two batteries in the box.

Skip it if you want a listed run time before you buy.

Throwup to 25 ft

Warranty2 years tool

The Snow Joe SJ627E is the corded model I'd take. Its path is 22 in wide by 13 in deep, against 21 in by 12.5 in on the PowerSmart DB7521, and it has an all-steel auger and push-button start, two details not listed for the PowerSmart.

Power comes from a 15 A, 120 V motor. The 180-degree chute throws snow up to 25 ft, short of the PowerSmart's 0 to 30 ft. You also get dual LED headlamps, listed as 3 W, and a maximum plowing capacity of 840 lb of snow per minute.

The limits are on the spec sheet: it's listed for light, fluffy snow on paved surfaces. The product page doesn't say whether it's single-stage or two-stage, and the drive is listed as "Auger Assisted". The only weight given is a gross weight of 34.6 lb, a shipping-style figure; no net weight is listed.

Buy it if your driveway is paved, within cord reach, and your snow is usually light.

Skip it if your driveway is gravel or your snow usually isn't light and fluffy.

The PowerSmart DB7521 is the corded pick if throw matters more to you than path size. Its listed throw is 0 to 30 ft, against up to 25 ft on the Snow Joe SJ627E.

Both corded models run on 120 V and 15 A, and both carry a 2-year warranty. This one is single-stage, with a 180-degree chute, a built-in LED headlight, 8 in rear wheels and a plastic base. PowerSmart says the single-stage design efficiently clears moderate snowfall.

The weight line doesn't add up. The listed net weight, 50.7 lb, is higher than the gross weight, 41.2 lb, so both can't be right.

Buy it if you want more throw from a cord than the SJ627E's 25 ft.

Skip it if you want a confirmed weight or a listed auger material.

How to choose

Choosing an electric snow blower starts with the power type, then path, throw, weight and warranty.

Corded or battery power

Pick corded if the area you clear is within extension-cord reach of an outlet, and battery if it isn't. Picture a 6 a.m. storm before work. The walk from your outlet to the end of the driveway settles this fast.

Reviewers split on corded power. Bob Vila says corded models are more powerful than cordless ones, while Consumer Reports says no corded electric is worth buying because they're underpowered.

Battery blowers tend to run quieter than gas models and are easier to maintain. On charging, the Greenworks is given as up to 150 minutes in one spec list and 50 minutes with the included charger in another. No charge time is listed for the EGO.

Clearing width and depth

Width runs from 20 in on the Greenworks to 22 in on both Snow Joes, with the EGO and the PowerSmart at 21 in. Depth is 13 in on both Snow Joes and 12.5 in on the PowerSmart. The Greenworks gives 10 in or 12 in, and the EGO a 13 in clearing height.

Throw distance

Throw runs from 20 or 22 ft on the Greenworks to up to 45 ft on the EGO. Chute range is closer: the EGO has 200 degrees of directional control, and the other four turn up to 180 degrees.

Weight

Compare weights only on the same basis: 38.68 lb with battery for the Greenworks, 45.2 lb with batteries for the Snow Joe 24V-X2-SB22. The SJ627E gives only a gross weight, the PowerSmart's figures conflict, and the EGO has no listed weight.

Warranty

Warranties run from 2 years on both Snow Joes and the PowerSmart to 5 years for the EGO tool. For batteries, the Greenworks covers 4 years and the EGO 3.

FAQ

Which of these suits a gravel driveway?

For gravel, I'd start with the EGO Power+ SNT2134. EGO says its skid shoes are adjustable for improved performance on gravel and irregular surfaces. The Snow Joe SJ627E is listed for paved surfaces. Greenworks does not recommend using its single-stage snow throwers on gravel, so I'd pass on the 60V there.

Do battery snow blowers lose performance in the cold?

Yes, battery snow blowers can lose performance in the cold. In Consumer Reports' cold-weather tests, battery run times dropped by 5 to 20 percent, and Popular Mechanics says performance can diminish below 0 degrees F.

How long can the extension cord be on a corded snow blower?

Up to 100 ft for the Snow Joe SJ627E. Toro's 1800 Power Curve manual allows up to 150 ft with 14 AWG cord (16 AWG up to 100 ft), and Consumer Reports cites 100 ft. Cord gauge matters as the length grows. Snow Joe's SJ627E manual warns that an undersized extension cord causes a voltage drop, resulting in loss of power and overheating.
